Fr Leonir Chiarello, Superior General of the Congregation of the missionary of St Charles – Scalabrinians presided over the opening ceremony and the blessing of the Centre. During the opening and launching ceremony, there was the presence of various stakeholders: the leadership of both local and refugee, religious men and women, our dear refugees’ brothers and sisters, and some representative from the Diocese of Arua. Fr Chiarello in his speech, on one hand, expressed gratitude to the Scalabrinian missionaries in Uganda for this initiative, which is align with the vision of the Congregation in accompanying the refugees toward integration, through empowerment programs, and the other hand, urge the refugees to take advantage of this opportunity that the Congregation is offering them on their doorstep. He thinks that the initiative, will make a tangible impact on the lives of beneficiaries. Then the refugee chairperson of Nyumanzi settlement, expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Scalabrinian missionaries for conceiving and implementing this transformative initiative. He emphasized that it will serve as a lifeline for the refugee women, offering hope where prospects were once limited.

The Centre named after our founder, St John Baptist Scalabrini, will offer some skills training to the refugees who are in Nyumanzi refugee settlement. The first project that is offered is fashion and design for the single refugee mothers with children, funded by Raskob Foundation, with the help of Scalabrini internation Migration Network (SIMN). Why this target group of refugees? Because single refugee mothers in the settlement context are bearing the cost of the lives of their children and of their families as a whole. They are breadwinners because of the absence of their husbands. They toil the small allocated fields but with little yield that cannot sustain the family throughout the year in terms food security. Furthermore, Refugee women lack of skills has long been a critical concern in the refugee settlement of Nyumanzi, despite ongoing interventions led by some organisations, skilling the refugee women project aligns seamlessly with the vision of Ugandan Office of the Prime Minister (the office in charge of the refugees in the Country). The core objectives of the project implemented are unequivocal: to empower vulnerable single refugee mothers with children, particularly those heading families and breadwinners, with skills that foster self- reliance, employability, and most notably, wealth generation.

The journey since inception has been nothing short of extraordinary, with the first group of 20 single refugee mothers enrolled in the program of fashion and design. Their newfound confidence and determination are evident upon selected. They are ready to acquire the skills in fashion and design and are confident that the skills will enable them to provide for themselves and their families. For that reason, just in a month and half of the training, the trainees are able to make both a plan and pleated skirts, and a blouse.

The resounding progress obtained so far since the implementation of the project can be attributed to a meticulously crafted methodology. Scalabrini Centre of Nyumanzi refugee settlement is fully equipped with every type of sewing machine and materials for the skills training, and also staffed with qualified instructors who provide comprehensive training.

The fashion and design training course is structured as a six-month based program, culminating in certification through the internal examination by the instructors, this opens doors even to formal employment opportunities.

The skills training stands as a beacon of hope, offering a lifeline to single refugee mothers who have grappled with limited opportunities by the fact of being a woman in their culture. Thus, by empowering them with practical skills, it not only enhances their self-reliance but also contributes significantly to positive self-esteem.
What is perhaps even more inspiring is the diverse background of the trainees. Some have overcome challenging pasts, having crossed the bush alone with children on their backs, or seen their husband killed in a cold blood. However, this skill program has given them an opportunity through psychosocial accompaniment to work on themselves in order to create that resilience in them.

The skills training at Scalabrini Centre for single refugee mothers, is not merely a program; it is a testament to the transformational power of skills development. Because it offers an extensive array of opportunities to the beneficiaries, ranging from English language and entrepreneurship to psychosocial accompaniment. It exemplifies the potential to change individual destinies and, by extension, the trajectory of our dear refugee.

Fr John Kawisha, cs

Padre John Kawisha, cs

On 22nd June 2024, the Scalabrinian missionaries in Uganda embarked on a journey of inspiration as their Centre for skills training in Nyumanzi refugee settlement was officially opened, and the first ever social project in Uganda was launched.
